Spring 2001
In 2001, I had the lucky chance to buy the 20-acre property adjacent to Jeanne and Steve Mason's place on
the north. Luckily, this was the depth of the "dot-com bust" and I had just gotten a new job with the FAA
that brought a substantial raise: The timing was perfect! Rob Hackman left the place in quite a mess; but
it was and is a wonderful place. With the view north to Mt. Adams and the view southwest to Mt. Hood,
the site is amazing. We will eventually retire here.
I had been going to Jeanne and Steve's place ("the cabin") since the mid-1990s. One time, casually, I
said that if Hackman ever sold, I'd buy his place, never thinking it would happen. Then in February 2001,
Jeanne and I were hiking on Cougar Mountain near Seattle and she mentioned that the place was for sale.
I visited in March, made an offer that month, and we closed in June 2001. We moved in on 21-July-2001.
The house-warming and new well came in the summer of 2001. That summer also brought the reunion of
me and Phyllis after living 2000 miles apart for 18 years(!). Each year since, we have spent time in White Salmon
with friends, hiking, and sight-seeing, and making improvements and cleaning the place up. It was a farmstead
for more than 50 years and there was quite an accumulation of junk on the place.
We love our place. The hiking is second to none. It's our annual chance to catch up with my friends in
Seattle.

Our big task this year was clearing "The Park" behind our place, to open up the view to Major Creek Canyon:

Another big task this year was final destruction of "The Minnow" (hurray!) after we tried to give it away for 11 years:
